The research is aimed at producing supported ionic liquid, or polymeric ionic liquid membranes that show improved performance for the DMFC over that obtained using Nation. The initial stage of work will involve synthesis of ionic liquids and ionic liquid monomers comprising a substituted imidazolium moiety with an associated anion, which may be Trituoromethanesulfonate (triflate, [OTf]), bis((trifluoromethyl)sultonyl)imide (triflimide, [NTf2r) or tris((trifluoromethyl)sultonyl)methide (triflide, [CTf3r), or HSO4, or H2PO4. Such materials will either be polymerised into a polymer, grafted onto a functional polymer, or loaded into a membrane material (either a pre-existing proton conducting solid polymer, or an unsubstituted polymer scaffold).The resulting membrane will be tested for temperature stability, methanol permeation rate, and ac conductivity. Materials that look promising will then be fabricated into a membrane electrode assembly and tested in a direct methanol fuel cell. We shall also characterise the methanol permeation rate in the active fuel cell and the DC conductivity of the complete MEA. Membranes that pass this phase will then be tested for longer periods (days/weeks) to ascertain their long-term stability.
