Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will develop a comprehensive, detailed and precise linguistic model of conversational interaction involving non-speaking people who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems. These AAC systems will include those that involve multimedia communication. The framework will also cover non-assisted conversation in order to allow comparisons to be made. This kind of theoretical framework is needed in order to capture over a decade's experience in developing AAC systems, the most recent of which employ multimedia technology. We will develop the model by extending and adapting current linguistic models of (unassisted) conversational interaction in order for them to encompass both AAC and multimedia interaction. The model will provide the basis for the establishment of sound design principles and evaluation techniques for AAC and multimedia systems, which are currently lacking. It will be applicable not just to the design of AAC systems but to systems in general employing multimedia communication - which will be increasingly used by us all in the near future. In order to develop, test and refine the theoretical model, pilot versions will be developed of a number of working AAC systems.
