Summary on Grant Application Form
The range of externally funded research into renewable and sustainable energy at the IBT, is broadly classified into three categories: 1) Renewable energy driven building services; 2) Sustainable building services; and 3) Natural ventilation, indoor air quality and urban air pollution. Over the past five years, the IBT has obtained research funding in excess of 6.5 million from the EPSRC, EC and industry and has published over 300 papers in refereed journals and international conferences. Strong links have been formed with leading international research groups and industrial companies. Although significant progress has been made on the development of sustainable technologies, intervals between funded projects often mean that experienced researchers with valuable expertise are lost, with inevitable implications for subsequent research projects. In addition, researchers are normally tied to particular research projects or contracts, often precluding in-depth exploration of other novel and strategically important or potentially valuable research ideas that might lead to major projects in the future. The discontinuity of both research personnel and development of research concepts, forms a significant barrier to maintaining and enhancing high quality research at an international level.
