Summary on Grant Application Form |
Novel classes of heteroditopic ligands capable of complexing metal salts will be designed, synthesised and evaluated in processes to open up new flowsheets for metal salt recovery from primary sources. A number of challenging ligand design features will be addressed in order to achieve high selectivity, high transport efficiency, and resistance to hydrolysis in strongly acidic media. An important feature of the receptors proposed is that the metal salt is incorporated into a charge-separated zwitterionic form of the ligand. Critically, this provides a stripping protocol to recycle ligand, and for extraction in strongly acidic media, the potential to extract acid as well as metal salt with high selectivity and high-transfer efficiencies.
