Summary on Grant Application Form |
The successful application of product surface inspection, considered critical in many manufacturing, processing and finishing operations, is often found to be problematic in application, particularly in the analysis of three dimensional surface relief, and in the case of surfaces which contain coincident coloured and topographic patterns. The ability to identify and quantify deviations in an observed surface texture is seen as an increasingly important aspect of surface quality control. The proposed research will be based on previous fundamental research by the investigators that addressed three-dimensional surface texture acquisition using a novel adaptation of the conventional photometric stereo method using a Lambertian reflection model. Research will be undertaken aimed at extending the Lambertian reflection model to coloured dichromatic surfaces, typical of real manufactured materials. The success or otherwise of the lighting models in predicting the reflectance of realistic surfaces will be assessed.
