Summary on Grant Application Form
A pilot study has been completed which explored the development of smart house technology for people with dementia. A communication bus has beer installed in a smart house, three support devices developed and integrated with the house, and a surrey of needs completed wioth carers. This project builds on the pilot work by developing new devices and systems for the house that aim to solve the problems identified by the user survey. The problem areas to be tackled include safety related tasks such as the use of the cooker, reminder devices for problems such as taking medication, and support systems such as a cookery assistant. All these devices will be designed to emulate the solutions that live-in carers have found to work with the people they are caring for. The project will also look at the more generic problem of communication with people with dementia by designing devices that use voice or text or through graphics, with the aim of being able to offer reminders and encouragement. The outcome of the project will be a fully equipped demonstator smart home to enable care professionals to see the potential of the technology for themselves, together with an understanding of installation costs, and the establishment of links with potential manufacturers of the successful designs.
