|
Virtual environments have the potential to help people with teaming disabilities acquire independence skills and therefore improve their quality of life and facilitate community inclusion. However, many people with learning disabilities experience problems with fine motor control thus making it difficult for them to use currently favoured input devices. Our research has also shown that much time is taken to learn how to use these devices before the user can benefit from the experience of using the environments themselves. In order to produce an affordable and robust device which reduces these problems, a prototype will be produced from a design driven by user requirements rather than technological capabilities and then evaluated. With the help of a group of 40 people with learning disabilities, this cycle will be repeated until the usability objectives have been attained. Such a device may also reduce the barriers to the use of virtual environments for groups such as the elderly or those with neuromuscular problems, for example stroke.
