Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research aims to improve the basic understanding of coastal processes, in particular swash zone kinematics and their potential influence on sediment transport and the erosion and accretion of beaches. This is one of the priority science areas in Coastal Engineering, largely because the swash zone forms the land-ocean boundary and is critical to the sustainable development of the coastline. The project will enhance existing research infrastructure and instrumentation, aiming to provide a world class facility for basic and applied experimental fluid mechanics. New experimental data will be collected for a range of wave conditions, focusing on onshore-offshore flow asymmetry in the swash zone. The data will contrast the kinematics induced by standing long waves and progressive bores, thereby assessing the potential influence and relative importance of the two fundamentally different types of swash motion. The experiments will also examine the importance of non-linearity in the swash zone and how complex random wave swash motion relates to simpler monochromatic conditions. In tandem with this work, new instrumentation for shallow water flow measurement will be developed, which aims to provide new cost-effective measurement techniques for future research projects, both laboratory and field based.
