Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research project will comprise the development and utilisation of a remote monitoring system for stadia dynamics. The system will include the capability for monitoring acceleration responses in addition to synchronised video, sound and other engineering data (temperature, wind, etc.). The data obtained using this system will be processed to examine a number of problems related to the behaviour of stadium structures under dynamic crowd loading. This will include an investigation into the linearity of stadia dynamics when empty and when occupied, an investigation into crowd participation effects and a detailed investigation of the dynamic properties of a stadium structure when empty and when occupied. It is intended that the system developed will be utilised in subsequent research projects as a relatively inexpensive means of obtaining an urgently needed large quantity of high-quality vibration data on numerous additional stadia. These data are vital for the development of improved guidelines for design of stadia for dynamic effects.
