Summary on Grant Application Form |
The toxic nature of tin hydride and the cost of many of the alternative reagents that have been developed for radical reactions has largely prevented the use or radical chemistry for the synthesis of pharmaceutical products. This project presents two alternatives to these reagents, namely, lithium aluminium hydride and sodium borohydride. Following on from several reports in the literature of the use of these reagents for some very simple radical reactions we wish to explore their scope and limitations for synthetic purposes. Initially, simple radical reductions will be investigated in which selectivity issues will be addressed. Later in the project a range of carbocycles and heterocycles will be synthesisied as a way of investigating the generality of these procedures.
