Summary on Grant Application Form |
The intention is to determine the structure and the mode of reaction of the active centre in Ziegler-Natta catalysts. This will be done by synthesising the active centre in-situ, by adsorbing in sequence MgCI2, TiCI4, internal donor/eg ethyl benzoate), co-catalysts (eg (C2H5)3 A1) and substituted silane on to gold foil. Each step of the synthesis will be monitored by PM-RAIRS, XPS and TPD. The PM-RAIRS system will be built and commissioned at IMIST using a demodulating software which employs novel digital signal processing techniques which have recently been developed by Bio-rad. The mode of action of this active centre will be determined by the adsorption of ethene and propene at subambient temperatures, monitoring the nature of the bond formed by PM-RAIRS, XPS and TPD. The kinetics of the polymerisation reaction will be determined by adsorbing the ethene and the propene at ambient and higher temperatures following the time and temperature dependence of the of the infrared bands corresponding to the formation of the C-C bond. The UHV equipment comprising XPS, AES and TPD has been donated to UMIST by ICI.
