Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the proposed research is to produce theoretically well founded and empirically tested principles for the design and evaluation of computerbased collaborative systems. Much of the development of computing and communications systems to support mobile, distributed, collaborative activities is driven by technological advances, rather than by a deep understanding of such activities and the requirements for their support. Many of the empirical studies of collaborative systems are descriptive, rather than theoretical and explanatory. The proposed research seeks to build the theory base, analysing collaboration in face-to-face and computer-mediated settings through the concept of common ground. The research will develop design principles which serve as bridging representations between the theory base and the production of computer-based, mobile, distributed, collaborative systems. These design principles will be tested in the design and evaluation of a prototype system.
