Having evolved from volume visualisation, volume graphics is emerging as an important sub-field of computer graphics. There is a wealth of evidence which suggests that volume-based techniques would be more attractive than traditional surface-based ones in many cases. With the rapid development of computer power, there is a need for the graphics community to respond to the emergence of volume graphics by engaging in more comprehensive theoretical and practical development in this sub-field, for which the realisation of an elegant modelling method coupled with an efficient and effective rendering engine must be the critical focal point.The proposed research will be built upon the existing research in volume visualisation and volume graphics, and the investigators' previous research projects, including the algebraic specification of CVG, and software for CVG modelling and rendering. The programme will extend the existing research and development work carried out at Swansea, which is one of several research centres in the field of volume graphics. It will address the fundamental shortcomings in graphics modelling methodology, and provide a rigorous mathematical foundation for CVG. It will transform the theory of CVG into a practical and useful method for general purpose graphics, and influence the development of future graphics hardware and software.
