Summary on Grant Application Form |
Passive three-layer sandwich assemblies consisting of two metal plates with a low density interlayer - such as GRP or a polymeric material constitute a well known means of disrupting jets produced by shaped charge warheads. Perforation of such sandwich assemblies by a shaped charge jet results in bulging of the metallic plates which engage and disrupt the jet and thereby degrade its subsequent penetrative capability. The primary aim of this project is to examine the detailed penetration mechanics of the interaction between shaped charge jets and passive sandwich assemblies in order to enhance both the understanding of the interaction and the ability to optimise the effectiveness of armour systems utilising these assemblies. Using a non-linear transient dynamic hydrocode (AUTODYN), a comprehensive base-line numerical model will be developed and validated against the results of experimental tests. The model will then be used to conduct a parametric analysis of the effect of varying jet tip velocity, jet tip diameter, sandwich obliquity, plate thickness and the properties of the interlayer and plate material.
