The incidence of stroke in Western Society has steadily increased in the past 20 years. The impact of stroke for the individual, healthcare provision and the workplace is considerable. One of the most fundamental goals following stroke is the recovery of mobility, yet even the maintenance of sitting and standing posture may be a challenge in the early post-CVA period. In addition to this, it has been demonstrated that Cognitive Motor Interference (CMI) can impact on postural skits (e.g. the ability to walk and talk : a prior NHS Executive project by Cockburn & Haggard). The initial section of this project will document postural development the impact of CMi, and the prognostic value of CMI assessment during the first 3-4 months post-CVA. The subsequent section of this project will introduce PC-based Virtual Environments (current EPSRC project: J. Wann) as a means of providing guided teaming of postural tasks and introducing CMI tasks. The benefit of the initial section of the project will be a clearer definition of the agenda that cognitive-motor intervention programmes should address. The benefit of the second section will be a direct appraisal of the potential impact of introducing patient-centred computer environments for movement rehabilitation.
