Summary on Grant Application Form |
For elderly people with dementia, their lack of a short term memory cuts them off from most social interactions. This Is particularly stressful for family and carers, who find ft impossible to have a way to spend time pleasantly with a person who continually repeats conversations within a very short time span. Reminiscence materials provide a useful way to structure interaction for a person with dementia, and to give them a way to experience success in communication. Presenting such materials as disparate media in the form of scrapbooks and audio/video tapes can be cumbersome to set up, and the interest of the person may be difficult to maintain. A richer and more engaging mufti-media experience would be possible to provide with current technology, which could involve the person more fully, and be more interesting and motivating for family and carers. This project will develop and evaluate a mufti-media reminiscence system and conversation support, and an authoring system to allow relatives and carers to construct a personalised experience. The design of such a system will have more general implications for future entertainment systems for people with dementia, and in mufti-media systems for general use.
