This project aims to address the problem of insufficient data on adhesive materials for effective modelling of joint behaviour in different environments. The methodology to be used is based on depth sensing indentation tests at different loads and rates and in different environments. Post-indentation deformation and recovery will be monitored by AFM and SEM and the indentation process will be modelled using FEA and closed form analyses. This knowledge will be used to develop a data reduction algorithm for the generation of meaningful mechanical property data from the nano-indentations. The success of the method will be validated by comparison with mechanical property data from conventional tests. The benefits will be; more time and cost efficient generation of this data, with increased confidence in its veracity. In addition to the benefits to users of adhesives in structural applications, the collaborators will ensure the benefits are also transferred to producers and users of polymer coated steels and users of polymeric adhesives in biomedical applications. The project aims to provide novel research in an increasingly important area of material science, provide training in the modelling of materials and disseminate knowledge to industry and the academic community, thereby encouraging industry to use new materials.
