Summary on Grant Application Form
To exploit the unique capability of the recently installed LSF Kerr-gated time-resloved resonance Raman and time-resolved infra-red spectrometers to establish the general mechanism of intramolecular charge-transfer in the excited states of a variety of molecules. The work follows from the first positive proof in a supposed prototypical molecule, dimethylaminobenzonitrile, DMABN, that twisting about the amino nitrogen, ring carbon bond is involved in charge-transfer, whereas changes from pyramidal to planar geometry around the nitrogen atom, an alternative explanation, would result in an increase in the frequency of this mode. The study now seeks to establish whether or not twisting is a general feature of the ICTprocess, which has been involved to explain the photophysics of literally hundreds of molecules. Beginning with substituted DMABN's which have either barriers to twisting, or pre-twisted ground-states, we will investigate by assignment of vibrational modes of ground, locally excited. and charge transfer states, and observation of frequency changes, the structures of these ICT states. The investigation will then be extended to selected dyestuffs in whictr nonradiative decay competing with fluorescence is attributed to twisting motion.
