Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of this proposal is to obtain a small time allocation of six weeks at the Ultrafast Laser Facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. We are attempting to obtain for the first time the excited-state vibrational spectra of the fluorescent photodynamic dye, MC540. To carry this out we will use the newly installed Kerr-gated picosecond time-resolved resonance Raman equipment which is unique in that it can obtain temporally resolved vibrational spectra of fluorescent materials. Since the technique is so new we will be able to perform unrivalled experiments that will delve into the excited-state structure of MC540. In particular, we will probe the interaction of the dye in the excited state with its local environment. Accordingly, time-resolved resonance Raman measurements on MC540 will be performed in fluid solution (ethanol) and an organized medium (reverse micelle). Since non-radiative deactivation of the MC540 excited state is the dominant energy wasting process we will be attempting to identify responsible key solvent-solute interaction sites of the dye.
