A key feature of existing radio is that a programme can be appreciated without giving the radio one's full attention: it is not necessary to sit in one place and watch a screen. It is important to retain this unique feature whilst offering more information and interactivity to listeners who choose to give more attention to the programme. A number of different strands of sample programming will be produced to demonstrate this approach. These will include factual, music and current affairs programme examples and a sample of advertising. The project will develop a user-friendly software toot for the production of mufti-functional DAB programmes including audio editing, picture editing to audio, 'Tell-Me-More' options and interactivity. A working prototype of the software package will be produced and tested by producing a range of programmes as described above, each featuring various technical possibilities of DAB. The DAB standard provides means to transport audio and data streams along with data files. The project will determine the best means for encoding the additional programme material (visual and interactive) and use the existing DAB standards (e.g. MOT) wherever possible to transport this material. A major area of work is to ensure that commercial multiplex operators can charge effectively for the additional bandwidth consumed by added-value content transmitted alongside the audio component. A charging mechanism will be demonstrated that accounts accurately and provides reporting for the multiplex operator's finance system.
