Summary on Grant Application Form |
Novel organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles will be synthesised using both the hydrolytic and the non-hydrolytic so[-gel routes. Both organically-modified silica particles and acrylic-silica hybrids will be synthesised and fully characterised. The aim is to evaluate the nanoparticles as modifiers of the properties of polymers used in coatings and as matrices in polymer composites. The particles will be blended into acrylic and unsaturated polyester resins and the effects on the cure process and the properties of the cured resins evaluated. The interface chemistry will be studied using surface analysis techniques. Fibre reinforced composites will be manufactured from the unsaturated polyester systems. The mechanical properties of the neat polymers and the composites will be assessed and the fractured samples studied in detail to determine fracture mechanisms. Relationships between hybrid structure and the properties of the resultant modified polymers and composites will be determined.
