Summary on Grant Application Form |
Although laser surface treatment has been recognised as a useful method for corrosion protection of surfaces as a result of improved mirosctructure/phase formation and compositions, there is a major technical hurdle not yet overcome - large area surface treatment. When the laser beam is smaller than the component size, overlapping of individual laser tracks is needed. This results in a non-homogenuous microstructure which forms local corrosion sites. Large beam processing also has a problem of generating non-uniform heating due to differences in melt flow in the centre and edges of the melt pool. This project, in collaboration with BNFL (British Nuclear Fuels, Plc) and The Welding Insitute (TWI) investigates the problems associated with both small beam overlapping and large beam processing in terms of material properties and corrosion behaviour in order to determine the applicability of large area laser surface treatment for corrosion protection. By comparing the differences between small beam overlapping and large beam processing, a strategy for large area surface treatment can be developed for a series of engineering materials to be studied in this project.
