Combinatorial Synthesis is now being extensively applied in biochemistry to assist in the development and assessment of new compounds for Pharmaceuticals and other applications. The traditional approach in developing complex new electronic oxides has been to synthesise bulk polycrystalline samples to explore the chemistry, structure and basic physical properties, and then to grow thin films for further physical measurements and applications. However, bulk oxide synthesis by ceramic or precursor routes is slow and does not easily lend itself to multi-sample, combinatorial approaches. Thin film combinatorial synthesis techniques are beginning to be applied to solid-state inorganic materials: within this programme we intend to develop a novel epitaxial thin film combinatorial synthesis technique. The aim of the proposal is to apply combinatorial synthesis to investigate new chemical systems and improve the properties of existing thin film materials through the development of improved buffer layers.We will apply combinatorial thin film growth (to provide extensive coverage of candidate materials) and bulk sample characterisation (to provide quantitative measurements of structural and functional properties).
