Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project seeks to address an important problem in the manufacture of TECs for implantation in humans as for the repair of damaged tissue or the replacement of diseased tissue . Since these constructs are grown on fabricated scaffolds in three - dimensional culture, it is impossible to monitor the progress of the tissue growth visually. This poses real problems for companies, clinics or surgeons in deciding at which point the tissue construct is ready for harvesting or implantation. The proposed solution is to develop a novel, non-invasive montioring system to characterise the tissue within the flow bioreactor as it is being manufactured, optimising manufacturing conditions and allowing the TEC to be harvested for transplantation or implantation at the ideal point in the growth cycle.
