Summary on Grant Application Form
Preliminary investigations have shown the existence of a new family of complex oxides with the tetragonal tungsten bronze crystal structure which have potentially exciting microwave properties. They have formulae such as Bat RE Ti2.5 Ta2.5 014.75. Little is known about them, other than that they have high permittivity and low loss at microwave frequencies; their formula appears to be different to that proposed in the original literature report but it is possible that the formulae may be variable by means of cation cross-substitutions. A systematic study into the synthesis and characterisation of this family of phases is proposed, incorporating structure determination by diffraction methods, electron probe microanalysis for composition determination, phase diagram work and electrical property measurements. This should provide fundamental knowledge of this new family of materials from which an assessment of their possible exploitation as microwave dielectrics will be made.
