Summary on Grant Application Form
In the project fully 3D granular dynamics simulations of fluidised beds will be performed. Initially simulations of fluidised beds without granulation will be carried out and the results will be compared with previous 2D simulations. The results will provide evidence of the effects of particle properties (elastic, plastic, frictional and adhesive) on the, general fluidised bed behaviour. In the second stage of the project fluidised bed granulation will be simulated to examine the evolution of the particle size distribution. The effect of various operational parameters will be investigated and, in addition to this and how the granulation process itself affects the fluidised behaviour, complete quantitative information about the history of individual agglomerates will be obtained. The expected outcome of the work is that a significant improvement will be achieved in our general understanding of how the simultaneous processes of agglomeration and attrition, mixing and segregation, and drying interact with each other.
