Summary on Grant Application Form |
The movement of freight by air is expected to increase by more than 340 % over the next 20 years. During the same period slot congestion at many of the UK's airports but particularly in the South East will squeeze out 'all cargo' operations because of economic and environmental reasons. Consequently if the market demand for air freight is to be met either there will have to be significant investment in new airport infrastructure or alternative transport forms are consideredThis research will assess the technical potential, environmental attributes, economic viability and infrastructural demands, of airships as a means of airfreighting goods. The research will investigate the potential of airship freighters to integrate with existing mufti-modal transport hubs and the existing freight network. In addition it will gauge whether there are any significant environmental and economic benefits to be had from pursuing airship technology, and, should such benefits be identified, recommend respective policy and financial initiatives to encourage further development.
