Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the proposed research is centred on three unresolved issues in giant magnetoresistance.(i) role of the mean free path and layer-thickness-dependent interface resistance in CPP magnetotransport: It is intended to model the conductance in Cr/Au/Cr and Fe/Au multilayers and demonstrate the relevance of the mean free path to CPP GMR. The importance of the interface resistance which depends on the layer thickness and the mean free path will be shown. This work will be correlated with experiments to be performed in Leeds.(ii) origin of the enhancement of CIP GMR in Co/Cu/Co spin valves covered by noble metal overlayers: The modelling of GMR in the Co/CU/CO trilayers covered by noble metal overlayers, such as Cu, Ag and Au, will be performed in order to understand the mechanism of the experimentallyobserved enhancement of GMR in these systems. Results will be linked with on-going experimental research in NIST.(iii) magnitude of the magnetorefractive effect in magnetic multilayers: It is intended to develop a theory for the optical conductivity of magnetic multilayers based on realistic electronic structure and predict the magnitude of the magneto-refractive effect in Co/Cu and Fe/Cr multilayers. Results of the modelling will be correlated with on-going experiments in York.
