Sprays measurement is vital to the fuel injection, fire suppression, chemical and pharmaceutical delivery and other industries. Commecrially available spn measurement instruments are expensive, difficult to use and cumbersome. The Laser Sheet Dropsizing technique offers the possibility of making an instrument which alleviates these problems. In edition it performs better in dense sprays than its competitors. However the requirement to calibrate the measurements has up to now tied the technique to labs which posers independent droplet measurement capabilities.A portable, user friendly LSD system will be built and will include a calibration unit for calibration in the field. This will consist of a stream of droplets of kn size.Droplet clustering in sprays results in uneven liquid distribution with consequences for controlled combustion or sprays deposition. The instrument will be to measure the degree of uneveness in sprays. Instantaneous measurements of spatially resolved droplet size and liquid volume fraction will be made in a characterised test system and in an optically accessed i.c. engine.
