Summary on Grant Application Form |
Non-proprietary or free approaches to creating and distributing digital tools and content have come increasingly into the public eye. The Free Software and Open Source movement is centred around tools such as operating systems, programming languages, and other utilities. Quickly established as a viable alternative to proprietary systems, this movement claims the twin advantages of economic efficiency and voluntary co-operation. The ideals and methods of this movement have inspired a diverse group of open content initiatives spanning a wide range: collaborative scholarship and research in the humanities and sciences, emergent art forms, and a variety of Internet applicationsTo consider these questions, we propose a Conference to be held at Queens College Cambridge on 5th and 6th April 2001. The conference, Collaboration and Ownership in the Digital Economy , will address issues that are critical to both the software technology and creative media industries, particularly the intersection between those industries, in which new media content is being created and disseminated via network and software distribution methods. The rapid development of the open content movement has far-reaching consequences in all fields of the arts, and it is essential that policy-makers and academics from the many fields relevant to this phenomenon have the opportunity jointly to consider its implications.
