Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has exceptional resolving power and the contribution made by the technique to the study of structure and dynamics in condensed matter physics, including the chemical, biological and life sciences, is well established and widely acknowledged. However, to achiev high resolution across a wide bandwidth of frequencies is less common because, a) to achieve efficient radiofrequency (rf) coupling and good S/N, the transmitter and receiver coils are necessarily narrow bandwidth devices and b) most commercial superconducting magnets operate in persistent mode at fixe field and frequency. To exploit the high resolving power of NMR across a broad bandwidth of frequency requires the specialised technique of magnetic field cycling. This is an experimental technique which has been employed in a variety of forms since the early days of NMR, but technological constraints have meant that the considerable advantages of studying NMR properties as a function of magnetic field or nuclear Larmor frequency have not, as yet, been wider nor fully exploited. In this proposal we request funds to build a field-cycling NMR spectrometer with a field ramping rate of 15 Ts-1. This will open up new are of science including applications in the biological and life sciences.
