Summary on Grant Application Form
A new methodology will be developed for the determination of stable isotope ratios for naturally heterogeneous samples (molecular scale upwards). A new isotope ratio mass spectrometer will be linked to a state of the art thermal analysis system (already, purchased), with design of a novel interface to take gas samples from one machine to the other. A novel data processing package will be developed to enable continuous collection o1 C, O and H isotope ratios from complex samples, with simultaneous collection of other key informatiDn about the sample. To test its effectiveness, the system will be tested on a wide range of samples, including:suspended solids from landfill, to identify their source (biological or from waste mineral material), landfill lining materials from laboratory experiments to assess their reaction with leachate,' - composite clays from kaolinised granite and petroleum reservoir rock. The system provides the only possible way of assessing isotopic equilibrium within dolomite (2 carbon sites) and chlorite (2 OH sites), and the extent to which this is achieved will be established.
