Summary on Grant Application Form |
The work proposed will deliver novel equipment that interfaces three complementary high resolution remote imaging techniques (three-dimensional X-ray microtomography, spatially localised X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy) to facilitate simultaneous probing of both the volume-based and the surfacebased morphology of the nano-engineered materials. The programme aims to investigate and demonstrate the dynamic evolution of micro-particle packing during sintering and compaction of nano-engineered materials. The research results will lead to a better understanding of the formulation and design of structured materials by providing the necessary links of interaction between the microstructural properties which are difficult to control and monitor and the macro-mechanical properties desired for specific applications. The instrument to be developed will also lead to fundamental work in other areas such as biomedical implants and plant biology.
