Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to develop a hybrid SNOM-STM instrument operating in UHV where tunnel current feedback is used to control the distance between a metal-coated fibre optic tip and a sample surface. The combination of UHV STM - which enables both atomic (sub-molecular) spatial resolution and electronic spectroscopy of individual molecules - and near field optical spectroscopies (fluorescence, photoluminescence and Raman) will uniquely enable a variety of novel, exciting nanoscale experiments. A key feature of the SNOM-STM propose will be the ability to exchange fibre optic tips in UHV. Following construction of the SNOM-STM microscope our experimental programme will focus on single molecule imaging and spectroscopy u UHV. This programme will provide unprecedented levels of insight into the relationship between the optical and electronic properties of dye molecul and light emitting nanocrystals adsorbed on semiconductor surfaces and the role that non-radiative quenching plays in molecular fluorescence. The final and very challenging component of our research programme involves the use of SNOM-STM to correlate the vibrational and electronic properties of individual carbon nanotubes and fullerenes through the acquisition of near-field Raman spectra.
