This proposal is to develop a range of lithographically-modified probes for combined SECM-AFM, which will allow independent topographical (via the force response) and electrochemical (via the electrode response) imaging of a wide variety of condensed phase interfaces. Four probe designs will be considered: (a) disc electrode probes; (b) high topographic resolution probes; (c) multiple (ring-disc and multi-segment) electrode probes; (d) locally-amplified electrode probes for high speed electrochemical measurements. All of the probes will be comprehensively examined to assess their function, durability, chemical compatibility, mass transport characteristics and resolution. Finally, the enhanced probes will be used to carry out spatially resolved measurements of interfacial processes, with correlation between topography and electrochemistry, and at significantly enhanced resolution than has been possible heretofore. Initial applications will include problems of significance to the life sciences (tissue permeability and cellullar activity) and materials science (effect of defects on local reactivity).
