Summary on Grant Application Form |
As computers become more powerful there has been an increasing emphasis on the modelling of vehicles within the design stage in order to reduce the number of prototype stages and development vehicles required in the engineering process. However, the variance in the noise and vibration response of production vehicles is still a major concern and large resources are expended to identify and remove sources of variability. This project seeks to identify and quantify sources of variability within a vehicle body-in-white assembly and to identify suitable methods of incorporating this variability into deterministic models of low frequency dynamic performance. In the longer term, the objective is to develop methodologies and tools to ensure that design decisions are robust with respect to anticipated uncertainties within the structure. This will produce a step change in build quality, without tightening manufacturing tolerances, since the response of the structure will be much more predictable.
