Summary on Grant Application Form |
The three main areas to consider for lack of accuracy on a machined component are the physical accuracy of the machine, user effects, and the work-place environment. Research into the design process of any high precision CNC machine tool in order to achieve an ever increasing demand for greater accuracy must optimise the error avoidance, error measurement and error correction strategies in order to meet a more stringent performance specification. The research to be carried out with this proposal determines the design, assembly, error measurement and error correction methodologies to achieve a higher performance specification when considering dynamic and static volumetric performance of a CNC machine tool. To achieve this a detailed investigation into structural elements on a variety of CNC machine tools and specially designed test rigs are proposed where all time and spatial error contributions will be targeted. Further research will investigate all elements of the CNC machine tool control systems to optimise their performance and for the introduction into the design process a methodology to minimise the significant errors. Validation will be demonstrated by introducing measurement, identification and correction practices to the collaborator's machines.
