Summary on Grant Application Form |
Summary: This research project will investigates the feasibility of a truly 3D method of rapid-prototyping (RP) with many potential advantages. The concept advanced by this proposal seeks to combine sophisticated geometric reasoning and automated assembly technologies to demonstrate the feasibility of a non-layered method of rapid prototyping. The program of research is designed to investigate the hypothesis that the current RP paradigm, of stacking 2D layers, is not the only possible approach and that assembly based processes may also be feasible. Crucial to the feasibility of assembly based RP are the software algorithms (required to support several different forms of geometric reasoning) and the robotic technology needed to precisely locate variable shapes. The programs of research describe in this proposal addresses both these important areas
