Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research will develop and validate the three key steps in a de-coupled approach to simulation of the global distortion which arises from the thermo-mechanical effects of welding. Specifically the research will (a) validate a novel computational treatment of the thermal problem through near scale welding tests (b) investigate and validate Okerblom-type simplifications, through comparison with thermo-elastic/plastic finite element computations and (c) establish the overall viability of the de-coupled approach by direct distortion measurement on welded plates. The applicability of the resulting design tool with respect to weld-attached plate stiffening will be assessed through case studies chosen with the assistance of industrial collaborators. Parts (a) and (c) of the programme will make use of thermographic mapping to determine key features of the thermal problem, such as asymmetry of the temperature field and the influence of end effects on the build-up of the quasi-static temperature field associated with the welding process. The impacts of practical design factors such as welding and assembly sequence, and end effects will be investigated.
