The effects of delays in the introduction of a new product can have far reaching consequences for a company. A study by the Department of Trade and Industry has shown that the critical factor which determines profitability is the timely delivery of the new product. Late entry to market or high production costs dramatically reduce profits whilst an overrun on development cost has little significant effect. However, the planning of product development processes is difficult since, typically, not all of the tasks will be known prior to starting the process. In addition, unexpected problems or the introduction of new requirements can change the development situation at anytime.The aim of the proposed research is to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of complex design processes. This tobe achieved through the development of models which highlight the connectivity between design tasks, via parameters and their states. Such models should enhance communication between team members and make planning more effective.Key words: design, manufacturing, planning, communication
