We propose to introduce a rigorous and quantitative measure of information - the transinformation (transmitted information) - into physiological and computational models for cochlear implantation. This will enable, for the first time, estimates of the average amount of speech information that is transmitted by a group of cochlear nerve fibres to be made. Criteria for maximising this measure will then be investigated in physiological and computational experiments. This will primarily involve the re-introduction of random noise sources that are thought to be an essential part of normal hearing back into the deafened ear. The established criteria will then be incorporated into a cochlear implant coding strategy which, in collaboration with Advanced Bionics Ltd, will then be tested in a series of perceptual experiments with human subjects. This interdisciplinary work builds on earlier studies carried out at Keele in cochlear implant coding and auditory physiology and at Warwick on stochastic resonance and noisy information processing.These initial studies indicate that significant improvements in the transinformation can be anticipated, thus concomitant improvements in speech comprehension are also expected.
