The project will have three interleaved strands - engineering (both mechanical and electronic), noise analysis and seismic analysis. The Industrial Collaborators will provide field test data from a hown-hole receiver system without noise, with circulation noise, and in addition with drilling noise.DERA will extend methods used in the cancellation of submarine hull vibration signals from sensitive hull mounted sensors designed to detetc distant acoustic sources. A Kalman filter will be constructed to model drilling of the borehole as a dynamic system. Such a model may be used to decouple the drill noise and the circulation noise components from the recorded seismic signal.At Edinburgh, the extent to which stacking of data can be used to reduce noise will be investigated. Data from different shotts may be used provided high pressure hydrophones are installed adjacent to airguns. The relatiionships between pressure and acceleration can also be exploited. Synthetic data, simulating VSP and reverse VSP, with and without known noise will be constructed for test purposes.Edinburgh in collaboration with DERA will investigate the design of shot signatures which are as disjoint as possible from the noise and are also feasible using existing airgun technology and capable of giving the required spatial resolution.JISITING FELLOWS
