Summary on Grant Application Form
Describe the proposed research in about 200 words. Experimental efforts to find the Fermi surface in high-T. cuprate superconductors have largely failed, prompting the theoretical community to dismiss the conventional Fermi-liquid description in favour of more exotic scenarios. We propose here an alternative experimental approach, based on angular magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO), that has proved invaluable in revealing the Fermi surfaces of many low dimensional organic conductors. One of the most promising candidates for the observation of AMRO in high-T. cuprates is the T12Ba2CUO6-, system, and studies will be focussed on high-quality, carefully annealed single crystals of TI2BaZCU08+ covering a wide range of carrier concentration. In the process, we aim to develop a new experimental facility, namely angular-dependent resistivity measurements in pulsed magnetic fields, that promises to open up a new arena for experimental investigation and test the limits of applicability of Fermi-liquid theory, not only in high-T. cuprates, but in the whole field of anisotropic, strongly-correlated electron systems.
