Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this research is to build a probabilstic cardiac atlas which enables the comparison of cardiac anatomy and function across time for an individual subject, between subjects and between different groups of subjects. Existing atlas building strategies focus primarily on the brain and rely on the spatial registration of anatomical and functional images in a 3D reference system to facilitate their comparison. We will develop a 4D reference system together with spatial and temporal registration techniques for matching images to this reference system. In order to capture the statistical variability we will build a probabilistic model which enables us to express a mean model of cardiac function and anatomy and its expected degree of variability. The probabilistic nature of this model emphasises the evolutionary aspect of the cardiac atlas, recognising the fact that additional data may be progressively added to improve its accuracy and statistics. We will exploit the probabilistic nature of the atlas for the automatic model-based segmentation of cardiac images by developing novel 4D patient-to-atlas matching techniques. In addition we will use the cardiac atlas for the comparison of cardiac anatomy and function between atlas and patient in order to quantify local myocardial wall thickening and well as cardiac remodelling as a result of surgical and pharmacological interventions.
