Summary on Grant Application Form
The electronic properties of correlated transition metal oxide systems pose some of the most difficult and important fundamental problems in condensed matter science. The aim of this proposal is to test a simple crystal chemical approach to the synthesis of structurally complex examples of such oxides, expanding the scope for the observation of co-operative properties characteristic of highly correlated systems, such as spin, charge and orbital order. The synthetic and structural characterisation programme is therefore closely tied to a detailed set of physical property measurements. The proposal is thus highly speculative, but successful testing of this idea will open up the possibility of predictably preparing a wide range of new oxides by this modular approach.
