Summary on Grant Application Form
The research project will start by conducting analyses of two batch plants in normal operation, to identify the most important constraints determining their behaviour. Six further case studies will then be conducted into the development of hazardous scenarios in batch plants, to determine which factors influence the escalation or control of such events. These case studies will identify a list of requirements for modelling batch plants, and a suitable formalism will then be developed to support these requirements, in terms of enabling the prediction of system behaviour under varying circumstances. The formalism will be tested by implementation of software to support the creation of equipment and plant models, and their use in simulation. The issue of how to simulate behaviour with minimum ambiguity using these models will be a significant theoretical hurdle to be tackled at this stage. The software will be evaluated, most likely by comparison with one of the normal operation case studies mentioned above. Feedback will be used to further improve the software and/or the model formalism.A number of risk assessment techniques will be examined for suitability for automation in relation to batch plants, and a comparative report will be produced. One method will then be chosen and a demonstrator application produced to show how that method could be automated using the modelling tools produced in the project.
