Summary on Grant Application Form
The work described in this proposal aims to exploit our expertise in the in and ex situ characterisation of catalytic intermediates by IR and NMR spectroscopies to determine the mechanism of, and factors governing the class of product formed in, two related classes of alkoxycarbonylation reactions: (i) the palladium/pyridylphosphine catalysed reactions of alkynes with CO leading to polyenones or methacrylate esters. (ii) cobalt/pyridine catalysts for the reaction of olefins with CO and alcohols leading to esters .The factors determining the mechanistic pathway followed and products formed in the related palladium/phosphine catalysed reactions of alkenes with CO will also be studied since recent results suggest the current understanding of this area is incomplete. Study of rhodium and platinum systems will also be undertaken as models for the more active cobalt and palladium systems. We will also further develop our unique high pressure NMR flow cell and extend our in situ capability to include inverse detected experiments which will enhance our ability to characterise catalysts containing N and PN ligands.
