Stabilisation/solidification (S/S) is likely to become the most cost-effective and fast method for the treatment/pre-treatment of hazardous waste and the remediation of contaminated sites to facilitate their redevelopment. Although the technology has been used for many years now, there remain many unanswered questions. In addition, because of the wide scope of this technology, a number of research centres within the UK have emerged which research specific aspects of S/S. This has fueled the need for a Network which will bring those groups together to act as a single unit to take S/S technologies forward. The network will bring together academics, industrialists and regulators with expertise in this field to strengthen existing collaborations and develop new ones, identify knowledge gaps and research needs and develop high quality research proposals. It also aims to develop strong links with international experts in this field. The Network objectives will be achieved by the appointment of a part-time Research Assistant who will be responsible for the day-day running and co-ordination of the Network activities under the overall supervision and management of Principal Investigator together with the 16 core members. The Network activities will include eight four-monthly meetings, three annual workshops, an international conference, a website, newsletter and database. It is anticipated that anyone who is interested in S/S technologies will be invited to participate in the Network activities.
