Our aim is to introduce the high precision methods developed for industrial manufacturing plant for component metrology, tolerance assessment, alignment, and digitisation into the field of stress and damage measurement. This will revolutionise the way experiments are undertaken and reduce measurement times and increase accuracy. It will allow the fusion of component distortion, stress and damage data in 3D into an engineering body scanner facilitate data visualisation. This will be achieved by coupling a co-ordinate measurement machine to existing stress and damage characterisation facilities with new software that will enable a component to pass seamlessly through the shape, stress and damage scanning stages. This will mean that time consuming component location procedures will be eliminated and that all the types of data collected can be kept in registry. For the first time it will be possible to bring together data from different techniques and to display each data set rendered using 3D graphics or with sets overlaid in 2D.
