Quarried aggregate is crushed and used as a major component in the manufacture of concrete and bituminous mixes. The quality of the aggregate in terms of the consistency of its size and shape has a major influence on the workability and durability of the mixes produced.Quality control of the aggregate produced is maintained by sampling and sieving the aggregate produced. Since it is only possible to assess a small volume of the aggregate produced, the quality of the results from these tests are limited since feedback is slow and possibly unrepresentative. An ability to measure the size and shape characteristics of an aggregate or mix of aggregate, ideally in real time is therefore desirable to enable the most efficient use to be made of the aggregate and binder available. This research proposes to make use of innovative techniques developed in the School of Computer Science at Queen's University to: (1) determine the physical dimensions of a piece of aggregate from a two dimensional image using a developed statistical model and to (2) determine the characteristics of an aggregate mix by comparing its global two dimensional texture with established standard images for that particular mix These techniques will then be tested and validated in an industrial context.
